What is a Read Aloud?
•The teacher reads a text out loud to students for an estimated 15 minutes.
•Multiple reading strategies are modeled (at least 2-3 per read aloud).
•Multiple strategies are taught for each skill.
•Students jot on Post-Its or in readers’ notebooks.
•There is plenty of conversation about what the reader is thinking while reading.

Student Strategies for a Read Aloud:
1.Think Aloud – The teacher discusses and models specific strategies by sharing the
thought processes out loud.
2.Turn and Talk –Students practice specific strategies by sharing their thoughts with a partner.
3.Stop and Jot –Students write down their thoughts on a Post-It or in their reader’s
notebook.
4.Stop and Sketch –Students sketch what they are envisioning at that point of the read aloud on a Post-It or in their reader’s notebook.
